Social mission

To put an end to the practice of female genital mutilation and forced marriage in Belgium and worldwide through preventive work with families, support for women already circumcised and training for professionals.

What does the Gams do?

  • Daily support for families (circumcised women, men, young people and children): Individual counselling and support in the Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia offices. Psychological consultations take place in Brussels.

  • Workshops: Workshops for young people, children (new workshop) and preparation for childbirth, monthly meetings and raising awareness in the tontines.

  • Training: Training sessions for healthcare professionals, social workers, welcoming asylum seekers and communityvolunteers.

  • Information and awareness: Organising touring exhibitions on request of photographs, “Hands that tell the unspeakable,” to condemn the practice of female genital mutilation.

GAMS Belgium NPO coordinates the Network of Concerted Strategies in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

  • The project in Senegal “A Pact for Education”: sponsoring young girls living in Vélingara (Senegal) to protect them from female genital mutilation and forced marriage.
